Full Length Album
Casual Island is a full length album release by Jane's Party in 2019 that included album art, merch, music videos, lyric videos, performance videos, in addition to the songwriting, performance and recording of the music. The release took place over the span of about two years. Below are a variety of release assets that I had the pleasure of creating or in large part contributing to their creation. Casual Island began as a set of home studio demos inspired by Jane's Party's experience supporting Tom Odell's “No Bad Days” tour across Europe in 2016. After returning home the band immediately called up producer Derek Hoffman (The Trews, Arkells, Elwins, Willa), and set up what would become the Casual Island sessions. Bassist/singer Devon Richardson says, "Derek is absolutely brilliant at taking what's initially unique and captivating about a musical idea and amplifying it a million times over". "So much of what made the final recordings came right from the original demos [not far removed from Tom Odell's own recording process]", says guitarist/singer Tom Ionescu. "This album feels very personal to us, like we're sharing that initial intimate experience when you're first coming up with the song and recording it in your bedroom", says keyboardist/singer Jeff Giles.
As of April of 2018, the band has been steadily releasing singles from the full-length, leading with indie-rocker "You're The Light" (Indie88), followed by "Acknowledgements", “Wait For You” (CBC3 Top 10) and with the release of the full album, the latest single, “Satellite” (Indie88 and SiriusXM The Verge). Each single has been accompanied by a B-Side, "Right Down The Line" featuring DJ Skratch Bastid, "Surfing On A Sinewave" (Pop Matters), featuring and produced by Leland Whitty (BADBADNOTGOOD), and “Drive” featuring Kirty (Fast Romantics). Drummer Zach Sutton says, "For the four of us, writing and recording music has always been a collaborative process. Bringing in Skratch, Leland and Kirty is our way of expanding the family and getting fresh creative juices into the mix. Every collaboration has been a huge source of inspiration that challenges the way we approach music making".

Remix: "Straight From The Heart" feat. Skye Wallace
After the release of the album, we worked on a kind of remix of one of the album songs "Straight From The Heart". I say "kind of" because the audio contents of the remix were completely new and so the mix was not reworked from the album version. So you could call it a reimagined version instead. I had the pleasure of producing, recording and mixing the entire track which featured a duet between Devon Richardson (the original song's lead singer) and Skye Wallace, a fantastic vocalist from Toronto. The production came out of an instrumental track I had made that I couldn't seem to write any lyrics to. Somehow the track seemed to fit a slowed down version of "Straight From The Heart" perfectly, and the rest is history.
Photo Shoot Concept and Design
In preparation for the release of the first single "You're The Light" I came up with an idea for a conceptual photo shoot. Drawing inspiration from classic 80's movie posters (Back To The Future, Star Wars) the shoot was scheduled following the band's previous release - a low key acoustic EP. I felt that featuring the band in this totally over-the-top epic style would be the perfect contrast to their previous work, and would provide that blank slate for the coming album.
